Cardiac surgery is performed on the heart. It may repair the heart valves, correct deformities, or bypass the heart's arteries, known as coronary arteries. Cardiac surgery has become very common, with some 40,000 operations performed each year in France alone. Although it is considered major surgery, with modern methods operating risk is low. All teams are approved by ministerial decree to perform cardiac surgery
The heart arteries may be narrowed or clogged by calcium or cholesterol deposits. This disease, known as atherosclerosis, is not heart-specific; it can affect any of the body's arteries. It is caused by smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, stress, and genetic predisposition.
After surgery, you will be brought into the heart surgery recovery room, where a team of doctors and nurses will monitor your lungs, heart, and kidneys with various devices until you wake up.
